A Modulating Perception "life on a loop" a short film by marcus cotten
The main character "Curtis Daniels" is a T.V. man and his antennas on his head convey his emotions.Curtis feels like his life is on a loop and he has no idea how he got himself inside that loop perhaps it was his 9to5 daily routine or perhaps it was Curtis's imagination. He some how got himself in the loop and now somehow he has to get himself out of it.His imagination, his emotions and his reality are becoming conflicted with each other
A small music & visual piece was recently created by marcus cotten using customized 8mm projections and music he programmed to exist with the projections. The 8mm film projections on the wall were created simultaneously with the music created by marcus. The fun thing about this piece is: by hitting the pause button on the video at the right time you can create new colors and double colors creating a sort of interactive experience with the piece...The video is about 1:30 seconds long
If you locked yourself out of your own mind how would you get back in?Invalid entry and the enchanting word is a short film by marcus cotten about the feeling and the portrayal of the thought process. The music and visuals work together to tell the story.
Marcus recently did a interview with "indie rock Cafe" and his custom instrument was discussed in the interview/artist feature...here are some words about it below
IRC: Marcus makes use of his own 'instrument' - a vintage radio transmitter receiver that reacts to a custom made remote control to pick up sounds traveling through the airwaves. To speed up, or slow down, the sounds transmitting from the receiver, and achieve whatever rhythm he has in mind, Cotten uses the remote control to move the antennas around "like a percussion instrument.
"I wanted to find more authentic sounds, and there really weren't the sounds I was looking for available," Cotten told Indie Rock Cafe. "So I thought maybe I would try to create something. I am fascinated by every day sounds, so a lot of times I hear things that aren't usually used for instruments, and i think, 'well, maybe that could be.'" A friend suggested he call the 'instrument' a MarCot, using the first three letters of his first and last names.
Marcus plans on demonstrating his instrument live at performances to come and also is currently recording new music featuring this instrument...

How this little experiment came about was that anytime i heard signals or noises from cell phone interference or from television or a radio i was intrigued by the sound. I always wondered what if you had some way to control that signal or interference noise you where getting and turn it into something musical.I thought what if you had some way to control that sound? So i played around with lots of things trying to control the signals and nothing really worked at all for awhile. All you got was fuzz.So finally i narrowed it down to if you made some kind of a remote control or manipulated a remote control you could get it to possibly control the signal. So after a long while of searching for the right two things that match (The right thing producing signals and the right thing to control it) I finally found the two matching objects. With some customization of the remote control It finally worked and I was able to control the signals being transmitted over the air.The sound turned out a lot more rhythmic then i imagined. It turned out to be a electronic percussion style instrument which i was kind of aiming at but couldn't describe that sound if i tried. As it stands now you can play with the radio transmitter/receiver a bit and get some crazy sounds, but the most consistent sound is definitely a pulse or beat which you can control.I still haven't come up with a name for the instrument yet.
I also wanted to say i do have a some more custom instrument ideas i am working on for the future and some things i have been playing around with.If i bring any of those things completion i will share them.
